Martyn Hett was a lively young man in his prime. His mum, Figen Murray, described him as a “live wire” and a “laugh-a-minute” before he was tragically killed on 22 May 2017 in the Manchester Arena terror attack.
The devastating attack took the lives of 22 innocent audience members who were at the Arena watching an Ariana Grande pop concert.
On 22 October 2019, the Home Secretary announced there would be a public inquiry into the Manchester Arena terrorist attack and Slater and Gordon represented a number of those who's lives had been significantly impacted. Figen was one of them.
“There’s a huge effort by everybody to get it right for us families, and I respect that” she said.
Figen was forced to quit her job as a psychotherapist following Martyn’s death and is now dedicated to raising awareness about terrorism and determined to leave a legacy for her son. She pursued a Master’s in counter-terrorism and campaigned for a law in Martyn's name, to standardise security checks in large venues which has received Government backing.
More recently, Figen has been recognised for her counter-terrorism work by being awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours.
